FINALLY we can play DOOM 2016 in full 6DOF VR thanks to the incredible work of Cactus VR Studios.
Ten years of people saying DOOM belonged in a headset, one official VR spin-off that was a different game, and then a Cactus Cowboy developer posts a 6DoF shotgun clip in August. Two weeks later you download a launcher and the 2016 campaign is happening in your living room. That launcher is KHARVOX. It is a real conversion, not a cinema overlay and not a depth hack. You have hands. You have room-scale. The Super Shotgun is where your hands are.
Cactus VR Studios released 0.5 Beta on September 11 as the first public build. You need a legal DOOM (2016) PC copy. Extract KHARVOX into a fresh folder, not into the DOOM directory. Run their launcher; it finds Steam, and you click launch. What you get is the thing VFR never was. There are tracked controllers. It offers six degrees of freedom. Stereo in the headset matters.
The recommended rendering path is AER. Additionally, native stereo is in the build. The readme says not to use it yet, which is honest for a beta that already performs well. People run it via SteamVR, Virtual Desktop, Steam Link, Quest Link, and PSVR 2 on PC.
This is not Luke Ross R.E.A.L. VR. R.E.A.L. injected 2016 earlier in the year as a different kind of mod. KHARVOX is the real VR conversion. When someone says the new Doom VR mod and they look excited, they mean this. It is still a beta. You will calibrate. You might relaunch once. You will not care when a Possessed Soldier occupies the same square meter as your coffee table.
Credit Cactus, the developer responsible for this work. We are very excited to jump into this VR masterpiece!
Own the campaign, grab the latest zip, extract it clean, and turn the volume up. The Slayer does not wait for version 1.0.
