SteamOS 0.3.0 Makes the Frame Charge Like It Means It

Valve shipped SteamOS 0.3.0 for Steam Frame. It is the first public system update since the September 14 launch.

The line that matters is the first one in the notes: “Substantially faster charging while unit is off / sleeping.”

That was not marketing language. Early units were extremely slow to charge. The Verge’s Sean Hollister measured a dead headset starting at about 8 watts and peaking around 27 watts. After 0.3.0, the same unit started at 19–21W and hit up to 42W while a game was running. PC Gamer’s meter read 27W with the Frame switched off after the patch. The headset supports up to 45W USB-C. There is still no charger in the box. Valve sells a 45W brick for $29.

The rest of the changelog is the stuff you actually feel on your face:

  • Better controller tracking while haptics are firing
  • Better stability under high load
  • The garbled-microphone bug is listed as fixed
  • Per-app Motion Smoothing “Force Always-On” actually applies now
  • Alyx motion smoothing was tightened
  • New toggle: dim the game when the dashboard is up
  • Play Area stopped auto-showing bounds

On the developer side, Playable no longer demands 1440p. Any resolution can qualify. There are Vulkan layer fixes plus Mesa and OS performance work.

Battery is still 21.6Wh on the rear strap. Reviews were already calling runtime short in Performance mode. Faster charging does not add watt-hours. It just means you can plug a dead Frame in and get back in sooner.

If you have a unit, take the update. If you are still waiting on a purchase email, this is the software that unit should land on.
