My letter to Gaben,
I’ve been playing PCVR since 2015. I had an Oculus CV1, HTC Vive, then a Valve Index. I missed the first wave of that too. I’ve been using my Index since.
I love my Valve Index. I love it so much I have two. TWO Valve Index kits. I also have 7, I repeat 7 Index controllers. 3 drifting thumbsticks. $200 CDN each. I have 24 Vive trackers. You probably think I’m kidding. No. 24 Vive trackers. Pics in the replies.
My point is that I’ve invested upwards of $5,000 in this hobby and remained loyal to your ecosystem because I support it and it’s the direction I want VR to go. Once I saw Valve, my baby, partnered with HTC I was all in with you because I love what you do.
All I’ve wanted for 5 years now is a Steam Frame. I’ve skipped multiple Black Friday sales. I’ve watched everyone around me get new headsets. I’ve held off. Not because I lack the funds. Not because of personal issues with the competition. But because of my loyalty to Valve and the open platform.
I’m not asking for anything. I just want you to know your lottery system sucks. Maybe I would think it’s great if I won the raffle. But I didn’t and it sucks. I wish you would maybe have given people like me a couple extra raffle tickets for my 12,000 hours in SteamVR, or the $5,000 I’ve invested happily in your ecosystem, not even counting my near 850+ games on Steam.
Truth is I lost my job of 25 years 3 days ago. This is not a sob story. I was given a very generous severance package and am not in financial distress. This was a Canadian company shut down due to the tariffs with over 100 people losing their jobs.
My plan was to do this. Make VR content. Make benchmark videos for Steam Frame. For standalone games. For flatscreen games. For PCVR mods. Now I feel it’s all for naught. I’m being left behind by Valve, and my chance to take this opportunity and do something I love feels over.
I’m not one of those youtubers that feels betrayed because you didnt give me a FREE headset. i wanted to pay you. I wanted to keep investing. But 3 months is a long time at this point. And I’m tired boss.
